North West England takes in some of the country’s most varied camping country, from the fells and lakes of Cumbria to the coastline of Merseyside and the Lancashire plain. The region is served by five historic counties and metropolitan areas, each with its own character and its own spread of campsites and caravan parks.

The five areas

Cheshire – A largely rural county of hedgerows, meres and market towns, with the Peak District fringes to the east and easy access from the Midlands and the north west’s motorway network.

Cumbria – Home to the Lake District and the Pennines, and the obvious first choice for walkers, climbers and anyone wanting scenery on the doorstep.

Lancashire – A mix of moorland, the Ribble Valley and the Fylde coast, with the seaside resorts of Blackpool and Lytham within reach.

Manchester – The city and its surrounding boroughs, useful as a base for visitors wanting an urban break with countryside close by.

Merseyside – The Liverpool city region and its coastline, including the dunes and beaches around Southport and the Wirral.

Choosing where to pitch

Campers tend to pick an area by what they want from the trip. Cumbria suits those after hill walking and lake views; Lancashire and Merseyside suit coastal breaks and family holidays; Cheshire and the Manchester area work well for shorter stays, touring stopovers and visits that mix town and country.

Whatever the destination, it is worth checking pitch types, electric hook-up availability and opening dates directly with a site before travelling, particularly outside the main season.
